I just thought this vintage U.S. Postal Service postage paid permit letterpress block indicia from New York, N.Y. was pretty cool when I picked it up at an estate sale.

The research librarian in me set out to discover what the type on the block meant. Here's what I uncovered.

"Sec. 562 P.L. & R." dates the use of this stamp between October 1, 1932 & February 25, 1949.

This letterpress stamp block was used for pre-paid postage on bulk mailings.

"P.L. & R." stands for Postage Laws & Regulations.

Postage Paid Permit No. 2309 was issued to the NY Edison Co and was first used on January 3, 1925.

Consolidate Gas, the parent company of New York Edison, changed its name to the Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc, (Con Ed) in 1936.

Condition: The block was used during its time and shows wear. I have not cleaned the block to preserve its patina. The wooden block has the traces of engraved lettering on the top. I can make out "562" &"N.Y.C."

Measurements: Block measures 3" x 1 1/8" x 1"

Designed by Gusta Aberg, this graphically striking image of wire cutters cutting through barbed wire was a Swedish entry in the Intra-European Cooperation for a Better Standard of Living 1950 poster contest sponsored by the European Recovery Plan (ERP), more popularly known as the Marshall Plan.

The ERP or Marshall Plan (1948 - 1951), conceived by George C. Marshall, Army Chief of Staff during WW II & Truman's Secretary of State, sort to politically stabilize & rebuild the economies of war-torn European countries while hindering the spread of Communism.

A panel of 12 graphic artists, one from each of the countries benefiting from the Marshall Plan, selected 25 winning posters from over 10,000 entries. The posters are graphically stunning pieces of political propaganda and historically interesting bits of ephemera from the early Cold War era.

The poster is in very good condition. It has only minor edge wear with two or three very small edge tears of about 1/8" or less and one ding in the paper near the bottom (see photograph two). I have encased the poster in a removable archival sleeve (acid free Krystal Seal).

My jaw dropped when I came across a stash of new old stock vintage Esterbrook Penesco No 509 Medium stub italic calligraphy dip point pen nibs at a recent estate sale. Made in Camden, New Jersey, there are 144 (a gross) steel pen nibs in each box.

Each box offered in this listing is in excellent unused vintage condition and has never been opened. Some of the box seals are intact, some of them are beginning to break.

This listing is for one box of vintage Esterbrook Penesco No 509 Medium Stub nibs. The slide-open box design and the Penesco tag dates the manufacturing of these nibs to the 1940s.

Vintage photography studio wedding party portrait provides wonderful insight into 1920s fashion and style. Big beautiful rose bouquets for the attendants, fabulous calla lily flowers for the bride, and lovely lace gowns, clues that this must have been a very upscale celebration.

The portrait is mounted in a gray heavy card-stock presentation folder with amazing silver-leaf border detail. The folder is marked "Adamoff, 74 Market St, Passaic, N.J." Top left-hand corner of the folder is bumped, but otherwise the cover and photograph are in amazing condition for their age.

In the first half of the 20th Century, a tie bar was part of every well-dressed man's wardrobe. This unique example bears a shield, cross and lantern emblem most likely from a fraternal order or religious group.

The gold tone shows wear and has rubbed off in some places, but other wise the piece is in good condition. Tie bar style dates this piece to the 1930s or early 1940s.

Vintage cancer awareness poster, this original lithograph is one of four in a series produced in 1941 by the U.S. Public Health Service.

Designed by Dorothy Darling Fellnagel, the poster graphically outlines the most up-to-date cancer treatment of the 1940s era.

This is an original circa 1940s U.S. Public Health Service poster not a reproduction.

Condition: Poster is in very good condition with typical wear around the edges, but no tape marks. One corner is a bit crumbled (see photograph 5) but could be smoothed out by a good paper conservator. There is an approximately 1 1/8" tear along the bottom edge (see photograph 2).

This circa 1950s Japan ceramic salt shaker Santa head has blue eyes, red cheeks, and a jolly smile. The figurine is marked "Japan" on the bottom and has it's original stopper.

Heart-shaped pressed cardboard pin with a kissing couple dressed in traditional German Bavarian costume, this tinnie was most likely given away at a local event or festival somewhere in Germany sometime prior to World War II.

I wasn't sure what this was when I found it at an estate sale, but I thought the kissing couple was so charming. After much research, I found information on a German solidarity propaganda pin from 1935 with a similar cardboard composition. The article referred to the pin as a "tinnie." Tinnies, which were usually made of metal, were popular in pre-World War II Germany and frequently distributed at public events, festival, and political rallies.

The cardboard has one ding in it on the right side by the gentleman's ankle, but over all, the tinnie is in remarkably good condition. The silky floral-patterned ribbon which connects to an old-fashioned safety pin, is bright and vibrant. There is also a short length of tartan ribbon tied in a bow at the base of the cardboard heart.

Cardboard Heart measures 3 1/8"
5 1/2" Total length including the ribbons.

Sometime back in the 1950s a loyal American Investment Co. employee received this sterling silver lapel presentation pin by Gordon B. Miller Company of Cincinnati, Ohio for recognition of 5 years of dutiful service. Measuring a mere 1/2", it's a tiny pin with incredible detail. The red enameled number 5 sits between the columns of a classically designed building.

The back of the pin is marked "sterling" and the screw backing is hallmarked "Gordon B. Miller & Co Cincinnati Ohio." In good vintage condition, this is a highly collectible service pin.

Created in 1934, the American Investment Company helped pull some investors out of the economic disaster of the Great Depression of 1929. The well-respected Gordon B. Miller Company was know for producing the highest quality "recognition" products.

A bit of Jackie O and a bit of Iris Apfel, these large round frame vintage sunglasses will complete your summer retro look. The frames are a clear red brown lucite with dark gray lenses.

Sunglasses are marked "May USA" &"Cathy" on one temple and "44 5" on the other.

The eyeglasses are in excellent vintage condition and come with a cool contrasting turquoise blue eyeglass case.

Sunglasses are 6" across. Bridge is about 5/8". Temples are about 4" long. Round frames are approximately 2 5/8" in diameter.

Sunglasses are circa 1960s, but will never go out of style.

Do you know what this is? It's a Hazel Atlas glass Depression era 16 oz 2 cup beater jar circa 1920s. At one time it was most likely paired with an A & J egg beater that got lost along the way. Hazel Atlas patented the jar design in 1923.

You don't need the beater to make this bowl a functional tool in your kitchen. Use it to measure flour when you bake, to mix scrambled eggs, or store berries in the refrigerator. The bowl has graduated measures for cups, pints, and ounces. It's stamped on the bottom with the Hazel Atlas mark and shows surprisingly minor wear for an approximately 85-year-old bowl. There are a few small nicks around the rim. Nothing major, nothing sharp.

Maruyama ceramic seated courting colonial couple figurine, he wears a green waistcoat and she wears a yellow bonnet. Bottom stamped "Made in Occupied Japan" in red, which places the manufacture of this piece between 1947 - 1952.

Billowing smokestacks make a bold statement in this political propaganda poster from Cold War era Europe. An entry in the Intra-European Cooperation for a Better Standard of Living 1950 poster contest sponsored by the European Recovery Plan (ERP), or more popularly known as The Marshall Plan, this entry by Dutch artist Louis Emmerick won a 5th place prize.

With a theme of "internationalism and cooperation," the ERP poster contest drew 10,000 entries from 12 countries. Twenty five (25) winning posters were selected by a panel of 12 graphics artists, one judge from each of the 12 countries supported by The Marshall Plan. The posters are graphically stunning pieces of political propaganda and historically interesting bits of ephemera from the early Cold War era.

In addition to its bold industrial graphics, this poster is interesting for its English tagline. The poster is in excellent vintage condition with just some minor wear at around the edges
