This solid copy of Edward Bulwer Lytton's Alice or the Mysteries was published by John Wanamaker, the famous Philadelphia department store, circa 1920. First published at the dawn of the Victorian era, Alice is a sequel to Lytton's Ernst Maltravers.
Popular in his day and known for his "purple prose," Lord Lytton coined what is possibly the most often quoted opening line of a novel, "It was a dark and stormy night," as well as the phrase, "The pen is mightier than the sword."
The vintage book shows obvious wear from the passage of time and use. The top of the spine is fraying and the paper is tanning. There are various pencil marks on the front endpapers as well as an old sticker address sticker.
