Are You Scrupulous?

This curious & brief Catholic religious pamphlet published by The Queen's Work, presents a discussion of the concept of scruples in an interview format with Francis J. O'Boyle , S.J. & Daniel A. Lord, S.J.

The "scruples" these Jesuits speak of in the context of this interview are what we would call today obsessions and compulsions or OCD. Before the development of modern psychology, such mental health issues fell under the jurisdiction of the church, and were referred to as religious melancholy, and tagged as "scruples" in 1660 by Jeremy Taylor, Bishop of Down and Connor, Ireland.

The booklet is in fair condition with the back cover separated from the stapled binding as shown in the photographs. Pages are clean.

The first, the original, the true Gidget The Little Girl with Big Ideas!

Rare first edition copy of Frederick Kohner's classic book of a California teenage surfer girl. Based on his own daughter, and written in the first person in her voice, Gidget captured the hearts of a generation. The concept of Gidget the surfer girl went on to became a huge commercial success as a movie and television series.

This is a true first edition copy of Gidget with the original subtitle on the cover "The Little Girl with Big Ideas" which was dropped from later editions. The dust jacket is unclipped and is in good condition showing wear around the edges with some small tears and small areas of paper loss. The book is clean. The binding is tight.

This vintage metal SRG caveman statue would make the ultimate man cave gift for your husband, boyfriend, brother, or any other special man on your holiday gift list.

Made from metal coated with bronze, this awesome vintage caveman statue is in good condition showing minimal wear. The caveman figure is 2 3/4" tall and is clearly marked "SRG47" on the back.

SRG (Sell Rite Gifts) made a full line of cast metal dinosaur and prehistoric toy figurines from 1947 until about 1955. The miniature metal figurines were sold at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and other natural history museum across the United States.

Originally made as children's toys, the SRG dinosaurs in my shop are being sold as display pieces and collectibles for adults as the vintage toys most likely do not meet current toy safety standards.

T.S. Eliot's The Cultivation of Christmas Trees is beautifully designed and illustrated by Erico Arno in this 1956 American first edition, published by Farrar, Straus, Cudahy. Part of the Ariel book series conceived by London’s Faber & Gwyer, the book is very brief, just a few pages long, and was intended to be an elaborate Christmas card.

The book is in good condition showing age-appropriate wear around the hardcover edges. The binding is tight. Pages are clean.

Vintage choir angel Christmas decorations circa 1960 made in Italy, use these beauties as tree ornaments, in a manger display, or as part of a table centerpiece. Two angels are playing instruments, a violin and cymbals. The third angel sings from a song scroll.

Molded from a high-quality hard plastic resin, these angels are in very good vintage condition. Each angel base is marked "Italy" and has a small loop in the back above the wings for a hang cord and an old metallic hanging string. One angel's string is broken but could be retied or replaced.

Each angel is approximately 3" tall. They range from 1 1/2" - 2 1/2" in width.

Vintage black leather bound My Sunday Missal comes with its original presentation gift box. The small vintage Catholic prayer book would make a lovely gift.

The prayer book has a flexible black leather cover, red & gold gilt page edges and three fraying silk ribbon bookmarks. The book shows typical wear. The front book hinge is broken but the binding is tight. The presentation box shows shelf wear. The bottom of the box has one split corner.

Prayer book has a presentation inscription in the front "From Uncle Bill" to "Daniel M. Shine on his Confirmation Day 11/8/52.

On April 7, 1942 little Daniel Shine ate vegetable soup for the first time. On June 18th he tasted daddy's cigar. On October 21st he dusted all the furniture. This memory book is filled with handwritten phrases and sentences documenting the life of a two-year old boy during 1942.

Entitled "My Calendar of Memory for 1942" & produced by Rust Craft Cards, this diary was given to customers of Morris Silver Stationery & Greeting Cards located in Jersey City, N.J. Daniel's mom managed to write an entry in this small date book on almost every day of the year turning it into an amazing child development record.

The calendar booklet is in good condition for its age. The stapled binding is intact. The paper cover is split on top down to the first staple. Pages are in very good condition.

Booklet measures 7" x 4".

Set of two vintage glasses with etched quails would make a fun addition to a bird motif glassware collection or hunting decor accent. The low ball glass tumblers are very heavy and are marked "France" on the bottom.

James W. Tufts triple plate canoe is a curious and rare piece of Victorian era silver plate work.

I'm not sure it this James W Tufts Boston triple plate silver piece was created for a particular function or as a decorative item. It would make a lovely decor accent in a cabin, lake house, or summer home.

The unusual piece of silver-plate metal work shows great craftsmanship and detail work with an ornate base, tree bark patterned canoe, and a removable insert.

The antique silver plate canoe is very old, is very tarnished with a deep patina of age. Other than dusting the piece, the canoe is in it "as found" state. I suspect that most of the silver-plating has been rubbed away over the years. I have not attempted to polish the piece as polishing with silver cleaners is known to remove silver plating. There are worn spots on the canoe and come chipping of the finish on the removal insert. Despite these flaws, this is a very rare collectible piece from James W. Tufts Boston.

The canoe is fully hallmarked.

Gorgeous vintage powder compact with raised metal flower details encrusted with prong set rhinestones and faux pearls, this mirror compact is a stunner, suitable for a wedding day or everyday.

This fine vintage purse accessory dates from the late 1940s - early 1950s, and is in amazing condition for its age. This lovely gold make compact was very gently handled by its previous owner. There are just a few tiny spots on the bottom and a very small rubbed area on the front near the clasp. There is an oval piece of white coated card stock that fits into the compact and a used powder puff.

The Egyptian goddess Isis graces the center of this small antique brass tri-footed trinket dish made by the Benedict Manufacturing Company. The plate has a beautiful repeat edging pattern reminiscent of the Arts & Craft style of the time.

Advertised to the gift trade in Geyer's Stationer 1909 catalog, the 'Karnak Brass' line was said to embody "the Egyptian idea of utility and art," and "A distinction and a uniqueness in quality that make it attractive to the best classes of trade." Each piece in the line was hand finished with "antique brass and Nile green decoration". You can see traces of the "Nile" green on the feet of this piece.

Based in East Syracuse, New York, the Benedict Manufacturing Company, founded in 1894, produced decorative metal household items from copper, brass, silver plate & pewter until they closed shop in 1953.

This lovely little dish is stamped "Benedict" along with the company hallmark, the number "573," and "Karnak Brass." The piece is in good vintage condition and shows a marvelous patina of age. The patina is not uniform over the entire piece and is lighter and darker in some spots. There is a "streaking" that almost looks as though light is emanating from Isis's wing. My preference with antique pieces is not to polish them, as I believe the aging process enhances their appeal. I will leave polishing up to you. The dish has a few light scratches on the surface from wear.

This very early piece of Higgins glass is a wonderful example of their fused and molded glass technique. The small ashtray or dish has a classic mid-century design, shape & color combination -- black, brown, sea foam green & gold color combination.

Initially created as an ashtray, you can use this small Higgins piece as intended (which I would not recommend -- bad for you and the art object), as a dish, or as part of an art glass display.

Founded in 1948, Frances & Michael Higgins began producing their now famous art glass in their Chicago apartment with kilns set up behind their sofa. Using the ancient art of glass fusing, the Higgins created the quintessential art glass of the Mid-Century Modern era.

This piece has an etched "Higgins" signature and dates to 1948 to the early 1950s. The dish is in very good vintage condition.

Approximately 5 3/4" at its longest point & 4 1/2" at its widest point.

Blast off with Colonel Bleep!

This is no ordinary atomic age space travel guide advertising premium from the late 1950s, this is a rare bit of Colonel Bleep! ephemera.

Colonel Bleep was the first color cartoon made for television. Created by Robert D. Buchanan and illustrated by Joe Barbera, Colonel Bleep! aired as part of Uncle Bill's TV Club from 1957 to 1960.

Made of two pieces of cardboard, the vintage space age toy has an internal spinning wheel that rotates and reveals information on the planets in our solar system. The advertising premium has fabulous atomic era graphics including rocket ships, sputnik, outer space, as well as a graphic showing the relative size and diameter of space bodies compared to the earth.

The advertising toy was a premium for Table Queen Bread, a sponsor of Colonel Bleep! on WBRE-TV Channel 28 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The space travel guide is in good condition for its age showing typical age and use related wear. The cardboard is tanned with age with light soiling. The corners are not sharp. The most notable wear is on the "Table Queen Bread" side of the piece on the bottom right-hand corner where the guide was most likely held when in use. There is light pencil shading on Mars.

The space travel guide is marked "SA-132 Corp 1958 Specialty Advertising Service Inc. N.Y."
