In the early 20th-century countless American teenagers learned their history lessons from The Story of the Ancient Nations: A Text-Book For High Schools by William L. Westermann. Published in 1912 by D. Appleton and Company, The Story of Ancient Nations was the standard history textbook in high schools across the nation.

Once belonging to Eliza Mary Martin of Mexico, Montana, who carefully wrote her name, address, high school, and teacher's name in script on the inside cover, this copy shows wear, but that just adds to its charm. There is shelf wear to the top and bottom edges and what appears to be an ink stain on the spine. The pages are in good condition with foxing typical of a book this age. The spine is beginning to loosen, but is not broken. There are some owner notations.

The textbook is packed with wonderful illustrations from a sketch of an "Egyptian Bartering a Necklace for Onions" to a mosaic of King Charlemagne. There are several fabulous full-page colored maps.

Instant collection of 9 sewing thread spools in fabulous shades of pink, rose, and maroon, put them on display or use the thread in projects.

Seven of the spools are heavy-duty card board and two are wooden. All have been used and have varying amounts of thread remaining. Please see the photographs. One wooden spool is marked "Imperial Silk Substitute," one is marked "Kismet Giant."

It's hard to say exactly the age of each of these spools. The woman I got them from said she had had them for a long time. The estimate is that they somewhere between 80 and 40 years old. Regardless, the colors are just wonderful and would make a beautiful display.

Four vintage vegetable seed boxes from the Card Seed Co. of Fredonia N.Y. make a colorful instant collection and perfect gift for the gardener.

Each seed box is a miniature work of art. The vegetable illustrations are gorgeous and are rendered even more beautiful by the old chromolithography printing method. Boxes were printed by the Genesee Valley Litho. Co., Rochester, N.Y.

The boxes are flattened and have never been. The story is that the Card Seed Co. went out of business in the 1920s, and in the 1970s, a cache of old seed packets, boxes, & displayed where found in an old warehouse. The cardboard boxes are sealed in protective plastic and show some yellowing and spotting from age.

This delightful and very rare postcard painting book, By Flowery Ways, produced by Raphael Tuck & Sons circa 1900s, presents various chromolithography postcards with accompanying sketches for the budding artist to color in--sort of like a Victorian ladies coloring book. Very sweet, the booklet is in fantastic shape for its age. There are 8 floral postcards in the booklet, 4 are signed "M. Morris."

What makes this postcard book extra special are the the signed (Catharina) Catherine Klein postcard reproductions on the front and back covers. From her Berlin studio, Catherine Klein painted the finest floral-themed and still life images. An independent woman (very rare for her time), and a commercial and artistic success, her work was widely used on printed items such as postcards and calendars.

The legendary firm of RaphaelTuck & Sons produced high-quality art prints and postcards from 1866 into the 20th Century. Prussian immigrants to England, Raphael, artistic director, and his business-saavy wife Ernestine started their printing empire in London. By 1883, they where granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment by Queen Victoria, and had established branches in Paris, New York, Berlin, and Montreal.

Some foxing, two sketches are partially colored in, and one sketch is missing.

Vintage illustrated children's textbook from the 1920s, this rare copy of Nelson's Geography Practice: Geography in Pictures reminds us how much the world has changed in a century.

Illustrations include photographs, black and white drawings, color plates, and art reproductions. Published in Great Britain by Thomas Nelson & Sons Ltd., the antiquated text gives an interesting insight into Britain's former colonial dynasty.

Title page stamped "Specimen" in ink with "1929" written in pencil. Two letter/number codes on the inside cover in blue pencil, possibly based on dewey decimal classification numbers as the 900 sequence begins the class for history and geography.

Vintage bright orange and yellow paisley fabric -- make something sunny and summery from this wonderful retro textile.

I found this fabric in a stack of remnants at the estate sale of woman who did a lot of sewing back in the late 1950s to early 1970s. She kept her remnant stash well organized and clean.

I do not know definitively what type of fiber this fabric is woven from, but it feels like cotton.

Lovely brass sugar maple leaf dish designed by Osker J. W. Hansen was made by Viriginia Metalcrafters in the 1950s. The beautiful leaf sculpture can be used as a trinket tray. Finely detailed, the leaf is heavy and can also serve as a paperweight.

Leaf is embossed on the bottom with "3-48 Copyright 1950, "Sugar Maple" & the Virginia Metalcrafters hallmark which is partially worn away.

Condition: Leaf is in good vintage condition and has a nice patina of age. There are a few age spots that might polish out. I'll leave that up to you, should you desire a more shiny new look.

Vintage crochet blue & white afghan blanket throw handmade in the 1970s is just the right touch for your retro decor.

I found this afghan in a bin with two others at an estate sale at a home that was frozen in time circa 1975. Everyone else was going crazy over the glassware but I realized right away that this blanket was an exceptional example of a simple crochet shell stitch pattern. Even more remarkable, it's in amazing condition. No holes, tears, pulls, or unraveling. In shades of blue and white, the colors bring the ocean to mind.

Handmade vintage textiles remind me of the continuity between generations. Forty years or so ago, someone took the time to make a blanket for her family. She most likely learned the stitch she used to make the afghan from her mother or grandmother, who learned the stitch from her mother, and on it goes back into history. Crochet is an ancient art and this afghan is a fine 1970s example of that art.

The afghan has been laundered and is ready for use.

Contents: 100% Acrylic Yarn
Care: Machine wash in delicate cycle with mild soap. When I washed it, I laid it flat and let it partially dry, then put it in the dryer on low. You could probably put it straight into the dryer, just make sure it's on low.

Wear a little four-leaf clover good luck charm on your collar with this sweet vintage rhinestone pin. This small brooch from the 1950s has a large clear faceted glass stone in the center. Each clover petal is studded with gold rhinestones.

The pin would make a classy St. Patrick's Day accessory.

Condition: Pin dates from the 1950s and has a nice patina of age. The gold-tone metal shows wear mostly on the back and lower part of the stem. Pin back is secure. No missing rhinestones. Please see the photographs for more information about the condition of this sweet pin.

This playful little mid-century Japan ceramic pig is adorable - just 2 inches long but loaded with charm. The piglet has brown spots, big eyes, and a pink flower at her neck. She is marked "Japan" on the bottom in red ink.


Product Dimensions:

Condition: Ceramic pig is in very good condition. The piece has no cracks & no crazing. There are no chips on the body of the pig. The underside hole is quite roughly finished and there feels to be a small chip. Please see photograph 4. There is some wear to the paint on top of her head.

Escutcheon door plate with a beautiful decorative motif, this antique piece of hardware comes with a skeleton key. I found the keyhole plate and key together in a dusty box at an estate sale, but I can't say for sure if they are original to each other. I don't think it matters, as they look as though they belong together.

Condition: The escutcheon plate shows wear and has a wonderful patina of age. The skeleton key also shows typical wear for a 100+ year-old piece of hardware.

Hung together on a wall, the set would make an intriguing decorative accent.
