Sibylle Aimée Marie-Antoinette Gabrielle de Riquetti de Mirabeau or simply, The Comtesse de Martel, wrote Le Druide, Roman Parisian, a roman à clef, under her pseudonym Gyp. Anti-republican, anti-Semitic, & anti-fashionable society, The Comtesse sounds like she was quite a character in fin de siècle France. Because of her unpopular opinions, The Comtesse had several attempts on her life and experienced a kidnapping.
Despite the Comtesse's questionable politics, this book is rather pretty from a decorative point of view. The front and back book boards are covered in a beautiful blue, black & yellow marbleized paper. The navy blue leather spine has gold gilt decoration and lettering. The book has an attached red & gold ribbon book mark. The volume has marbleized endpapers.
Condition: This book is almost 130 years old and has a marvelous patina of age. The leather is worn and chipped in places along the spine. The back top corner is bumped. The marbleized paper is worn in places and there is a scratch on the front. The pages are yellowed with age and have some foxing around the edges.
Measurements: Approximately 7 1/4" x 4 3/4"
