This vintage Cunard White Star R.M.S. Queen Mary ocean liner menu dates from November 25, 1936. The dinner menu offers an array of classic upscale culinary fare of the time period.
Launched on in May 1936 at the heyday of transatlantic ocean liner travel, Cunard White Star R.M.S. Queen Mary was considered the most luxurious of vessels. It had two indoor swimming pools, beauty salons, libraries, children's nurseries for each class of travel, a lecture hall, a music studio, dog kennels, telephone access, and a Jewish prayer room -- a policy decision to show the world that Cunard was against the Jewish racism of Nazi Germany.
The menu's cover has a reproduction of an original circus mural painting by Doris Zinkeisen commissioned for the Verandah Grill, which would become the most popular dining room on the ocean liner. The reproduction spans the front and the back of the menu.
The luxury ocean liner was retro-fitted for military use during World War II. Painted gray, the shipped was nicknamed the "Grey Ghost" and carried over 15,000 troops per voyage during her commission as a troopship. Zinkeisen's mural was destroyed during the Army's tenure on the ship. She painstakingly restored the mural after the war.
The menu is in good vintage condition. The edges show light wear, soiling, and some black marks possibly from the printing process. The card stock was not folded exactly even and there are some The menu is marked on the back "Printed in England Q C F."
Menu measures approximately 13 1/2" x 8 1/2" closed.
