Did a soldier carry this volume of Robert Browning's Poetical Works with him on the Western Front? A War Service Library bookplate indicates that this book was one of many distributed to U.S. troops during WW I.
Published by John C. Winston and printed in Great Britain, this undated volume is similar to others dating from the late 1800s. The red leather bound book has a decorative gold Arts and Crafts style design on the spine, a photograph of Browning opposite the title page, and eight illustrations.
The compact book has a soft, flexible cover, red ribbon bookmark and gold gilt "Robert Browning" signature in the middle of the cover. The book shows age appropriate wear. The book was obviously read and enjoyed. A piece of leather is torn at the top of the spine, there edges and corners are worn, the cover has a light crease in it, the back cover is beginning to separate from the book at the base of the spine. Book is stamped "Collegiate Periodical League." It looks as if someone once tried to remove the War Service Library bookplate. Pages are clean. Binding is tight.
