135.00 USD

This antique black crochet purse has steel cut beads and an expandable gate top metal closure with a fleur de lis design.

The steel cut micro beads on this chatelaine purse are arranged in a pleasing geometric pattern. I tested the beads with a magnet and they are indeed steel.

Condition: Overall, the purse is in remarkable condition for 100+ year-old lady's bag. Some of the steel beads show rust. All beads appear to be present. The crochet work bag is in very good condition and is securely sewn to the gate-top closure. The expandable metal opening is tarnished but in good working order. The top of the closure looks as though it may at one time have had black paint or enameling.

Measurements: 5 1/2" long including fringe; 2 3/4" at its widest point;

Large brass rams head bookends will add a dramatic touch to any decor - perfect for the library, den, office, or man cave. The ram heads have a wonderful patina of age.

The brass metal bookends are large and heavy, measuring approximately 7" tall x 5 1/4" wide x 4 1/4" deep. They weigh over six pounds. Each bookend has a felt-lined bottom and its original "Made in Korea" foil label.

Bookends date from the 1950s and show wear and aging consistent with their age. The brass has a lovely oxidized patina. The brass could be polished up to a nice shine, but as many prefer an aged patina, I will leave polishing up to you should you desire a brighter look.

Vintage Poster Political Propaganda Cold War Era ERP Marshall Plan Poster Contest - Original Lithograph by HappyFortuneVintage

$

325.00 USD

Designed by Dutch artist Emil Hotz, green leaves growing out of barbed wire symbolize new beginnings after the devastation of World War 2. A winning entry in the European Recovery Program (ERP) Marshall Plan's Intra-European Cooperation for a Better Standard of Living 1950 poster contest, this is a genuine piece of Cold War era political propaganda.

The ERP or Marshall Plan (1948 - 1951), conceived by George C. Marshall, Army Chief of Staff during WW II & Truman's Secretary of State, aimed to politically stabilize & rebuild the economies of war-torn European countries while hindering the spread of Communism.

A panel of 12 graphic artists, one from each of the countries benefiting from the Marshall Plan, selected 25 winning posters from over 10,000 entries. The posters are graphically stunning pieces of political propaganda and historically interesting bits of ephemera from the early Cold War era.

Artist: Emil Hotz
Lithorgraph, 1950
Toward A Better Future
21.5 x 29.5 inches (54 x 74 cm)
Printed in the Netherlands by Kuhn & Zoon, Rotterdam

This is an original lithograph not a reproduction. The poster is in remarkable condition for its age. It was part of the estate of a graphic artist who collected all 25 winning posters in the Marshall Plan poster contest. The posters were all stored flat in a drawer in a climate-controled studio. The poster shows some wear around the edges with very small tears, but no paper loss. The colors are vibrant. I have encased the poster in a removable archival sleeve (acid free Krystal Seal).

I have all 25 prize-winning posters and will be listing them in my shop over the next few weeks. If you are interested in a particular poster in the series and don't see it listed, or you would like to purchase the entire set, please send me a message.

125.00 USD

This German language book set has beautiful brown & gold decorative bindings, an instant collection that would look handsome on any shelf. Printed in heavy Gothic typeface, the book pages are as attractive as their covers. As I don't read German, I can't comment on the content.

The five (5) books in this listing are part of a 10-volume set of novels by Gottfried Keller published between 1904 and 1911 in Stuttgart and Berlin by Cotta'sche Buchhandlung Nachfolger.

A 19th-century Swiss writer who wrote in German, Gottfried Keller is best known for his novel Der grüne Heinrich (Green Henry). Keller was one of the most popular writers of literary realism in the late 19th century. Der grüne Heinrich is included in this listing. This set includes volumes 1, 2, 6, 7 & 8.

The books are in good vintage condition with typical wear for their 100+ years. Covers show some rubbing and wear mostly at the edges and along the spines. Der grüne Heinrich has a stain on the back cover. It looks like a few of the books had silk bookmarks which have broken away.

Books measure approximately 7 3/4" x 5 1/4." The book stack takes up about 5 1/2" of shelf space.

Antique Books -- T. Smollett Complete History of England -- Leather Bindings Decorative Books Instant Library -- Prop -- Library Decor by HappyFortuneVintage

395.00 USD

How cool to sport a collection of antique 18th-century books on your library shelf. Perfect for office or home decor, these four (4) leather-bound volumes by T. Smollett (Tobias Smollett) are also historically significant.

The four volumes are part of Smollett's The Complete History of England published between 1757 and 1765 in London and "printed for James Rivington and James Fletcher, at the Oxford-Theatre; and R. Baldwin, at the Rofe, in Paternoster-row."

A Complete History of England from the Descent of Julius Caesar, to the Treaty of Aix La Chapelle, 1748. Containing the Transactions of One Thousand Eight Hundred and Three Years.
By T. Smollett, M.D.

This set includes:
Volume the First -- The Second Edition, 1758
Volume the Third -- The Second Edition, 1758
Volume the Fourth -- The Third Edition, 1758
Volume the Ninth -- The Third Edition, 1759

The volumes contain some illustrations, mostly portraits of kings.

Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish poet & writer best known for his picaresque novels such as The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751) & The Adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom (1753). Charles Dickens credited Smollett as an influence on this fiction. Smollett also translated Miguel de Cervantes's Don Quixote into English, but he considered The Complete History of English to be his greatest work.

What condition do you think you would be in if you were 256 years old? Well, these books are old and show their age. These books were printed before the use of acid wood pulp paper. Being printed on high-quality cotton or linen based paper, the pages are supple and are not crumbling. They are somewhat yellowed by age particularly at the edges. Some pages are dog eared, a some pages have markings, spots & soiling. The fold-out map in the front of the first volume is torn but complete. There are two fold-out illustrations which are also torn, but complete. The leather covers are dry and crumbly. The bindings are in tact.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like me to send you additional photographs of the books.

Map Handkerchief - United States Map - New York City - Greenwich Village Artists Colony - Original Art-Kerchief - Souvenir Hanky Hankie by HappyFortuneVintage

$
0
0

50.00 USD

This "Original Art Kerchief" handkerchief is "strictly for show not for blow." "Created, sculpted, and painted by Artists Colony of Greenwich Village, N.Y.C.," this is a rare New York City souvenir handkerchief.

Hand cut in the shape of the map of the United States, the handkerchief has the abbreviations for each state, and "New York City" handwritten across the top. New York State and the island of Manhattan are hand painted orange along with a red star denoting New York City. The entire handkerchief is outlined in gold.

The fashions and hairstyles on the label date the handkerchief to the1940s. Could this have been an attempt to raise money to pay the rent on the colony's studio space on the south side of Washington Square Park? The colony was evicted from its studio space when its lease expired at the end of 1948. New York University, the property's owner, tore the studio building down and built their law center on the site.

Original label is present but not attached to the handkerchief. There is no fabric content tag. My guess is that it's made from a nylon fabric. The handkerchief is in very good vintage condition. There are a few stray black marks which look to be from the making process. There are a few very small tears near the top on the gold edging. The handkerchief does not have a hem.

Handkerchief measures approximately 10 1/2" long by 10".

I currently have a Tammis Keefe Greenwhich Village handkerchief in my shop as well:

Cambria Steel Handbook 1909 -- Vintage Industrial -- Antique Steel Industry -- Man Cave Decor -- Decorative Burgundy Leather Binding by HappyFortuneVintage

48.00 USD

Cambria Steel, A handbook of information relating to Structural Steel manufactured by the Cambria Steel Co., containing useful tables, rules, data, and formula for the use of Engineers, Architects, Builders and Mechanics prepared and compiled by George E. Thackray, C.E. Structural Engineer, Cambria Steel Co. General Office and Works: Johnstown , Pa. 1909 --

The title page of this industrial catalog pretty much says it all.

Filled with fascinating information about the development of the steel industry, this handbook's contents are also graphically interesting.

A cool vintage book for the collector, it would also make a great decorative element in your office, man cave, or den.

This Cambria Steel handbook is over 100 years old and was used in its time. The front cover endpaper has a "Department of Public Instruction Form No. 47" from the Paterson N.J. school system. The partially filled in form indicates that the book was a reference text in the evening school and was new to the library in November 1910. The opposite endpaper has the name "Thomas Kidd" & the date "March 1911" written in ink in an attractive script. There is also a very faint Oxford, England address written in pencil. The leather cover shows wear particularly around the edges and the spine including chipped & missing leather.

The book measures 7" x 4 1/2' x 1 1/4".

Chalet Music Box Weather Station -- Vintage Musical Thermometer Barometer -- Folk Art -- Made in Germany -- Swiss Chalet by HappyFortuneVintage

$

38.00 USD

Charming Swiss chalet music box weather station will let you know the current temperature. Wind it up and it will play Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oh, What a Beautiful Morning from the Broadway show Oklahoma. What a great way to start the day!

In addition to the working thermometer, the weather station has a knob on top to set a rudimentary barometer in the form of a man and a woman who take turns coming out of the chalet depending on the humidity. The chalet has directions on the back in 4 languages -- German, English, French, & Dutch. I'm not sure if the "barometer" works.

Over all the chalet is in good vintage condition. The wind-up music box works great. The chalet was made in Germany circa 1960s.

Chalet is about 5 1/2" tall including the top adjustment knob, 6 3/4" wide & 3 1/2" deep.

Vera Scarf - Early Vera Neumann 1940s Hand Silk Screen Scarf - Leaf Design - Leaves - Orange Gold - Textile Art - Fall Autumn by HappyFortuneVintage

$
0
0

58.00 USD

Beautiful early Vera Neumann scarf with her classic pressed leaf motif is a very modern design for a 1940s scarf. The beautiful gold oak leaves pop against the dark orange background. A scarf with a similar leaf border design can be found in the book "Vera, The Art and Life of an Icon" on pages 30 & 31.

Vera Neumann began making silk screened scarves in her New York City loft in 1947 after acquiring a lot of surplus parachute silk leftover from WW II. The small, evenly sized letters of the "Vera" signature, absence of a copyright tag, and the pressed leaf motif tells us that this scarf was made in the late 1940s. It's thrilling to think that this lovely silk scarf could have been silk screened in Vera's New York City loft.

The small silk scarf measures approximately 15 1/2" wide x 16 1/4" long.

Overall, the scarf is in good condition and shows wear consistent for it's 65+ years. The scarf does have areas of fabric separation common for a delicate silk item of this age. This is a scarf for display, not for wear. It would look amazing framed and hung as art.

I have a treasure trove of early vintage Vera Neumann scarves. If you are a collector, and looking for a particular piece, please let me know. I may have it!

Not sure where he was made, but he was part of a figurine lot with items mostly from 1950s - 1960s Japan.

In very good vintage condition, the figure has no cracks, chips or crazing. It does have what appears to be glue markings on the bottom, perhaps from a removed tag. Please see photograph four.
