This set of 18th-century medical books is not just a cool bundle of leather-bound antique tomes packed with antiquated medical information that will look amazing on your shelf. The copy of Cheluis's System of Surgery has a hand-written name indicating that it may have belonged to Arthur M. Lynah, a surgeon in the U.S. Navy until he resigned and joined the Confederate forces at the onset of the American Civil War.
According to historical records, Lynah resigned the U.S. Navy on January 9, 1861 and joined the Confederate Navy on March 26, 1861. He was on the CSS Palmetto State -- remember the ironclad ram that broke through the Union blockade at Charleston --, he accompanied Commodore Perry to Japan and spent three years traveling through Japan and China. He is also on the roster of the doctors responding to help the victims of the Charleston earthquake of 1886. He was born in Charleston in 1825, and died there in 1890.
Wood's Practice of Medicine has the signature of Benjamin Perry West as well as his stamp "B.P. West." Genealogy records show that B. P. West was born in 1831 and died in 1898 in South Carolina. He practiced medicine in Greenville County. He volunteered for the Confederate army in 1861 but was "sent home to care for the sick of his community."

These books are old and show their age. They were obviously used by the doctors who owned them. The bindings are intact, but the leather is dry, worn, pitted, and stained. The pages although fairly supple, have foxing, spotting, browning. You can surely read these books, but they should be handled carefully with respect for their rarity and age.
I would be happy to send you additional pictures of the books for your perusal prior to purchase.
The books make a heavy package and will be shipped insured via USPS Priority Mail.
