These carte de visite are part of a collection of photographs from one Berlin family. The collection is an interesting visual glimpse into the life of a wealthy German family in the late 1800s into the early part of the 20th century.


Carte de visite were invented in Paris by André Adolphe Eugène Disdéri in 1854. He also developed a method of producing eight separate negatives on one plate making it easier to produce multiple cards of an identical image. In the mid to late 1800s, carte de visite became all the rage and were traded among friends and relatives.

Cards are in good condition for their age showing typical wear including scratches, edge wear, rubbing, fading, and spotting. Each card has the number "3226" written on the back in pencil and as well as the gold gilt stamp of Samson & Co Berlin.

Cards measure approximate 4 1/8" x 2 1/2".

Confession of a Neurasthenic by Horace Hazeltine is a rare piece of antique pharmaceutical advertising. Published in 1911 by Bauer Chemical, the illustrated autobiographical story recounts the author's suffering with the symptoms of neurasthenia until he was saved by the drug Sanatogen.

Billed as a brain tonic, Sanatogen was heavily marketed by Bauer Chemical as a nerve revitalizer and remedy for neurasthenia, a condition coined in 1869 with symptoms including fatigue, nervousness, and anxiety.

The small illustrated advertising pamphlet has a decorative cover and a binding sewn with red thread. The cover shows wear particularly around the edges with creases and minor paper loss. The pages are clean and in good condition. The advertising booklet includes a fold-out sheet of "Letters from Famous People" including comments by Lady Henry Somerset, George Ade, David Belasco, John Burroughs, Sir Gilbert Parker, and others notables of the time.

Take a look at the faces of the school girls in this antique photograph from Berlin, Germany, circa 1900. Amid this sea of miserable expressions, one girl with a big white bow on top of her head has the hint of a mischievous smile at the edges of her lips. Rare Park & Pollard advertising booklet, Lay or Bust Year Book and Almanac for 1919, is packed with information on raising chickens, along with a bit about hogs and cows.

Historically interesting, the farm booklet's introduction asks the reader if "You are a good American," and refers to the World War I defeat of Germany, and rising demand for foodstuffs.

The illustrated booklet takes the farmer through the year providing detailed information on what to do to raise healthy chickens.

The antique almanac is in good condition with typical wear around the edges. The back cover top corner is missing (see photograph two). The color cover is bright and in very good condition. The booklet has a hole in the upper left-hand corner for ease of hanging in a convenient spot for easy reference.

Beautifully illustrated gift copy of The Catholic Family Book of Novenas, this vintage prayer book comes in its original presentation box.

The small black leather Catholic prayer book has two attached red ribbon bookmarks, gold gilt page edges and title lettering, and decorative endpapers. There is a section of hymns at the back set to music.

The vintage Catholic prayer book is in very good vintage condition showing a bit of scuffing on the cover. The former owner wrote her name and address at the front of the book. The original cardboard presentation box is in good condition with typical shelf wear around the edges.

Classic set of vintage glass Christmas ornaments in their original packaging can be hung on your Christmas tree or simply displayed in their decorative box. Made in the Lewiston, Maine circa 1950s, this box of Paragon glass ornaments has a teardrop shape. Four of the ornaments have white stenciling.

The Christmas ornaments are unused and in their original box, but they do show signs of the passage of time including oxidation typical for this type of glass. The box has a lovely mid-century Christmas scene and shows shelf wear at the corners and light soiling.

Standing proudly on a chair, this young child with her white hair bow and bold polka dot dress appears to be enjoying her photography portrait session. This triplet set of antique carte de visite come from the estate of an old German woman whose family carried an amazing cache of photographs with them when they immigrated to America in the early 1900s.

Compare the face of the young child in this photograph with that of the girl with the big white bow in her hair and striped dress in the following photograph.

The cards are well over one hundred years old and are in good condition for their age showing typical wear to the photographs and the card edges. Little Players Growing Up A Piano Book is a charming music instruction booklet & collection of sheet music for child learners. Written by Robert Nolan Kerr and published by Theodore Presser Co in 1949, the booklet has amazing illustrations which harken back to a very different time and sensibility.

The booklet is in very good condition. A former owner wrote his name in pencil on the front cover above Theodore Presser, but this personal touch just adds to the publications charm. The pages are clean. The front cover is creased.

Cool old first edition printing of Ginny Gordon and the Leading Library by Julie Campbell has an amazing cover that you will want to put on display. Illustrated by Margaret Wesley, this collectible vintage young adult mystery novel would be the prefect gift for a librarian or book lover.

A previous owner was a Beatles fan and wrote "Paul McCartney" and "George Harrison" on the front endpaper, and signed herself as "Martha Harrison" with the date "May 14, 1964" on a page near the back of the book.

This is an old book and it shows its age. The book is beginning to loosen from the binding. The book was not printed on high-quality paper, and thus the pages are browning with age, but are not crumbling. The book's hardcover cello coating is beginning to peal off the spine. The corners are bumped and there are few pages with bend corners.
