Long before the Internet granted us almost instant access to information, trivia, and argument settling answers to questions, people relied on reference books.
This handy nineteenth-century edition of Conklin's Vest Pocket Argument Settler would make a fun gift for the modern-day Internet geek. It's filled with information that a hip 19th-century man would have needed to know, starting with "Presidential Election Results by State 1860 to Date (1896), and ending with a "Table showing how many Days A Note has to Run." The book has an index of topics including:
Alaska, Cost of, to the United States
Argument Settlers About the Air, Earth, Water, Volcanoes, Earthquakes and the Human Species
Beliefs, Queer
Bell Time on Ships
Bicycle Questions and Argument Settlers
Brick, Number of, Required to Construct any Building
Cement, How to Make a Good
Corn, How Deep to Plant
Divorces in Various Countries
Funeral Customs, Curious
Greeting, National Forms of
Habits of a Man of Business
Inks, How to Mix for Tints
Laws About Homesteads
Manners of Great Men
Oat Meal, Value as Food
Paradoxes of Science, The
Religious Beliefs, Strange
Scriptural Money, The Value of
Things That Never Will Be Settled
Valuable Suggestions to Clerks and Workingmen
Wheat Prices Since 1860, Annually
Year, The Ancient and Modern
And so much more, including advertising pages at the back.
This is a genuine antique book not a reproduction. Expect wear. Overall the small pocket-size book is in good condition. There is wear on the cover and a bit of fraying around the edges. The paper is very lightly tanned with age. The back hinge is broken and there is some separation at the front but the binding is tight. Note that the page prior to the title page sticks slightly (see photograph three) near the top of the page. There is a bookseller's star-shaped embossed stamp and a red price mark.
