Night Haunts of Paris by Roland Vane (pseudonym of Ernest L. McKeag) is just what you would expect from a pulp fiction novel from the early 1950s. Written in an exposé style (pun intended), the back cover informs that "These exposures may shock you; they will certainly thrill you and hold your interest until the very last line."

Picked up at an estate sale, I just couldn't resist the title and cover. The slim work of pulp fiction came in a protective plastic wrapper which I will send along with the book. The wrapper has two stickers on it, one says "Night Haunts," and the other "Heade GGA Cover," referring to cover art by Reginald Heade. GGA is an an acronym for "good girl art," a pulp fiction art style term coined by the American Comic Book Company for cover art depicting sexy women in improbable poses.

Pulp fiction by definition refers to books printed on cheap pulp paper which ages quickly. The book is in good condition with typical tanned paper. The cover graphic is bright but has a chip off the edge and some soiling. There is sticker residue from a price tag and light soiling on the cover.

Antique photograph postcard of a Catholic priest taken in the vicinity of Berlin, Germany in the early 1900s was among a cache of one family's photographs spanning from the 1800s into the 1900s. There is no indication if this young priest was a relative, although there is a resemblance between this man and a woman who appears to be the family matriarch.

The photograph postcard is in fair to good condition. It has noticeable wear around the edges and corners. There are a few soil spots on the image as well as general signs of age.

The photographs appears to be a black and white that has faded to more of a sepia tone.

The photograph postcard was produced by Samson & Co., the Berlin, Germany photography studio that also took other pictures in this family's photographic cache. Documents in the cache indicate that the family's name was Jasick.

Standing proudly on a chair, this young child with her white hair bow and bold polka dot dress appears to be enjoying her photography portrait session. This triplet set of antique carte de visite come from the estate of an old German woman whose family carried an amazing cache of photographs with them when they immigrated to America in the early 1900s.

Compare the face of the young child in this photograph with that of the girl with the big white bow in her hair and striped dress in the following photograph.

Not a recent reprint, this is a genuine first edition copy of Sick in Bed With Stocks. The book was read and carefully examined showing signs of wear and age including some pencil notations, dog-earred pages, bumped corners and wear at the top and base of the spine. The book's pages are tanned with age. Paste down publisher's correction on page 25. Overall, a good sound copy of a rare title on the stock market. Binding is tight.

Circa 1920s vintage art reproduction of Charles Bosseron Chambers "The Light of the World," a detail from the larger painting "St. Joseph with the Child Jesus," is a lovely piece of Catholic art. The vintage art print would make a special gift.

Along the way, the vintage religious art print was put into a classic 1950s gold-tone filigree frame. The frame has an easel back and also a metal hoop making it easy to hang the beautiful piece of Christian on the wall as decor.

The art reproduction is in very good condition as it has been well preserved under the frame's glass. The vintage gold-tone filigree frame shows typical age-related wear on the gold, mostly around the edges, but is still in good condition.

The original "St. Joseph with the Child Jesus" hangs at the St. Ignatius Church in Chicago.

Sweet trio of vintage pottery chalkware figurines includes two angels and a little boy with his dog. The miniature figures make a very appealing display grouped together. The figures are reminiscent of Jean Manley's pottery and Hermione Palmer's early work. The boy reminds me of Tintin and his dog Milou (aka Snowy).

Found in a box of vintage miscellaneous pieces of California pottery, one of the figures, the angel with black wings with gold polka dots has a curious makers mark, ""Four Star Lines Hollywood Calif. Hand Made."

The circa 1940s figures show wear including chippy paint, soiling, and small chips most notably on the angels's wings.

Vintage globe by Replogle shows the world circa 1933. This is a rare 7-inch diameter globe with a domed "Big Dipper" metal base. With its Art Deco styling and small table-top size, this globe is perfect for display on your desk or office bookshelf.

Although small, the globe has lots of detail including a legend, international date line, tropics of cancer and capricorn, the path of Adm. Bryd's 1929 flight to the South Pole, Lindbergh's 1927 flight, & a selection of radio stations.

Vintage Independent Order of Odd Fellows pennant banner from the fraternal order's Hackensack, N.J. lodge bears the classic all seeing eye symbol along with IOOF three-link chain symbolizing friendship, love, and truth. The antique felt banner also has symbols of a goat, crossed axes, and an arrow.

Dated May 7, 1912, the banner is over 100-years old and shows typical wear for an antique textile. The symbols and lettering are appliquéd to the felt. The appliqués are in good condition. The blue felt is a bit faded and the white felt along the border is tattered and yellowed with age. The pennant banner's felt ties are missing.

Rare 9-inch diameter vintage world globe is a bit of an oddity. It has a stepped Art Deco glass base used by Rand McNally during the World War II era, but the vintage globe also has a decorative cast metal support arm typically seen on globes from the 1920s.

This Rand McNally Indexed Terrestrial Art Globe shows the world in the early stages of World War II. Austria has been consumed by Germany (Anschluss, March 1938), Czechoslovakia does not exist, Poland's border is perforated indicating occupation by Nazi Germany.

The globe has an interesting mix of political designations indicating that it was made very late in 1941 (Marshall Islands are under Japan occupation but the Gilbert Island are marked as British) or early 1942 (Italian East Africa dissolved in early 1942).

This is a beautiful old globe with a deep and warm patina of age. The oceans are a turquoise blue with nautical distance indicators. There are eight masted ships scattered through the seven seas. The political boundary colors are muted shades of pink, green, and yellow.

The globe shows wear including general dust, soiling, spots, and areas of paper loss. The Equator line is missing revealing the globe's center seam. There is a metal plate and cork disk at Antarctica where the globe connects to the cast iron mount. The glass Art Deco base is in beautiful condition.

Prim and proper portrait of a gorgeous redhead, this vintage Hair Style of the Month poster is as striking as it is retro.


Published in Chicago by Hair Style of the Month, this original poster was produced for display in hair and beauty salons across the United States. The poster is printed on sturdy coated paper and has an image on both sides.

This poster was displayed in a Chicago hair salon and shows wear. One side of the double-sided poster is slightly faded from the sun. The poster has some wear on the edges, light soiling, and tape residue where it was affixed to a display. The poster was stored rolled up for many years.

Measurements: 20" x 16".

Vintage deck of playing cards given away by Baltusrol Golf Club at the 1961 U.S. Women's Open are a rare find. This vintage golf collectible would make a fun gift for the golfer in your life.

The poker-size playing cards are crisp and appear to have only been played with once or twice. The box shows wear particularly at the corners and has some scuffing and nicks.

Cards were produced by Miller Golf, Randolph, MA, and printed in Brazil.

Vintage fleur de lis with a gold gilt finish broke off the top of a French provincial style lamp decades ago. The lamp is long gone. The finial made its way to the garage where it hung on a hook until I recently picked it up and brought it into the house.

Ripe for repurposing, this cool bit of salvage can be used as a wall hanging or worked into a new arts & craft project.

The fleur de lis is in very good condition. I'm not sure of the piece's composition. There is a seam running along the sides indicating that it was made in a mold. It is not hollow and has some heft to it.

This curious antique brass cylinder-shaped box has a beautiful black lacquer casing with gold gilt details. Made by the Waterbury Brass Goods branch of The American Brass Company and marked an Anaconda Product, the brass cylinder looks very much like a late 19th century - early 20th century tea caddy. The vintage brass container has black enameling with red details and the initials "R.E.D." engraved on top.

My guess is that this beautiful decorative container was a promotional piece made in Waterbury, Connecticut in the mid to late 1920s to publicize the Anaconda Copper Company's purchase of The American Brass Company in 1922.

This interesting relic of the once-mighty American brass industry shows considerable signs of its age and the passing of time. The lacquer outer container has chipping around the rim, as well as cracking along the cylinder. There is a chunk of lacquer missing along the decorative gold gilt design (see photograph 5). The brass cylinder has some scuffs and wear to the black enamel and denting along the bottom rim (see photograph 2).

Despite these flaws, this is a rare and collectible piece of American industrial history.

This "Original Art Kerchief" handkerchief is "strictly for show not for blow." "Created, sculpted, and painted by Artists Colony of Greenwich Village, N.Y.C.," this is a rare New York City souvenir handkerchief.

Hand cut in the shape of the map of the United States, the handkerchief has the abbreviations for each state, and "New York City" handwritten across the top. New York State and the island of Manhattan are hand painted orange along with a red star denoting New York City. The handkerchief is outlined in gold.

The fashions and hairstyles on the label date the handkerchief to the 1940s. Could this handkerchief have been an attempt to raise money to pay the rent on the colony's studio space on the south side of Washington Square Park? The colony was evicted from its studio space when its lease expired at the end of 1948. New York University, the property's owner, tore the studio building down and built their law center on the site.

Original label is present but not attached to the handkerchief. There is no fabric content tag. My guess is that it's made from a nylon fabric. The handkerchief is in very good vintage condition. There are a few stray black marks which look to be from the making process. There are a few very small tears near the top on the gold edging. The handkerchief does not have a hem.
