Weathered book set of two Norman Mailer classics will not only look great on your bookshelf but are well worth the read.
Norman Mailer's The Naked and The Dead, considered one of the best novels of World War II, catapulted the 25-year-old author to literary fame upon its publication in 1948. The Rinehart symbol (an R in a circle) on the copyright page indicates that this is a 1st edition copy of this 20th-century classic. Includes a New York Herald Tribune Weekly Book Review clipping of Richard Match's May 9, 1948 review of the book. I found the clipping neatly folded between pages 642 & 643. Consequently, there is significant yellowing on these pages from prolonged contact with the clipping.
Here's a quote from this glowing review.
"'The Naked and the Dead' is about infantrymen--or, rather, men in the infantry --and the despair, the lung-searing fatigue, the unutterable terror and horror of jungle war. Its author is Norman Mailer, aged twenty-five, writing out of Brooklyn, Harvard, Leyte and Japan. Forget the age and remember the name: Norman Mailer. With this one astonishing book, his first full-length work of fiction, he joins the ranks of major American novelists."
