Women At Work, a World War II era home front propaganda pamphlet issued by U.S.O Division National Board Y.W.C.A. in 1943, has amazing illustrations by Henrietta Wireman and a society-changing message.
Part manifesto, part political propaganda, this small brochure defines the new modern American woman born out of wartime necessity. This pamphlet is a clear precursor to the ideology of the American Women's Movement.
The brochure states the kinds of work women are doing:
"We are:
Clerks
Typists
Welders
Inspectors
Assemblers
Waitresses
Riveters……."
There are references to the laws that protect women workers, as well as the need to expand those laws to cover all working woman.
"We need to keep our umbrella from leaking….and to bring under it other 'Woman at Work.'"
There is a page devoted to shift workers, defining the different shifts & what they need to work safely.
The "Women Away From Work" centerfold outlines various activities a working woman could engage in during off hours, and encourages women "When the Whistle Blows We Made a Bee Line to the USO."
A page of the pamphlet is devoted to other reading materials available through the USO concerning women and work.
Also packed into this small booklet is advise on men and relationships, staying informed about the world, & planing for post-war America.
"Experts say there can be jobs for all -- regardless of sex or race."
The booklet has amazing illustrations including working women in slacks taking public transportation to work & a women riveting an airplane propeller.
This is a little gem of a war time pamphlet. It's in overall good condition for its age. The booklet has a one-staple binding. The staple is present, but it is rusted and does not hold the pamphlet together. The paper around the staple has rust marks. There are some spots on the cover.
The pamphlet measures 5 5/8" x 4 1/4" and consists of three folded sheets of heavy paper -- 10 pages plus the front & back cover.
